Top 10 Searches
This year's top ten searches in Yahoo! Philippines attest to the Filipino netizens' enthusiasm for sports, obsession with celebrities, interest in politics, and addiction to controversies. They wanted information about the National Basketball Association, Manny Pacquiao, election results, and Anne Curtis. Here's what mattered most to our users in 2010.
- The Philippines is a basketball-crazy country, and the United States' premiere professional basketball league, the National Basketball Association (NBA), is this year's most-searched topic in Yahoo! Philippines Search. Fans looked for information about NBA teams, schedules, results, the NBA draft, and the NBA finals, where LA Lakers defeated the Boston Celtics.
They also wanted to know about LeBron James, so they searched for videos of his dunks and even photos of his house. After James left Cleveland Cavaliers to become a free agent, basketball fans wondered which team he would join next. His decision to join Miami Heat was met with criticism. Even NBA legends Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson chided him for the move.
Kobe Bryant -- this year's highest-paid NBA player according to Forbes -- also remained popular this year.
Other notable NBA-related searches in 2010 included Miami Heat's Filipino-American coach Erik Spoelstra, who visited the country in August to promote basketball and fitness, and the second NBA Asia Challenge exhibition game.

- This year's elections heralded the end of an unpopular administration and brought widespread hope for change among Filipinos. "Change" started with the way the election was conducted. On May 10, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) administered the first nationwide fully automated election, as mandated by Republic Act No. 9369.
Election results were delivered early, thanks to Smartmatic's precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machines, which were used to count votes and transmit election results. A Twitter account named after the PCOS machine even got thousands of followers because of its funny tweets.
With the help of the PCOS machines, the winners of local-level elections were already known as early as the night after the polls. The Comelec posted the election results on electionresults.ibanangayon.ph and updated the figures as new data came in.
The Philippines' first automated elections also pushed to the limelight -- and to our search logs -- Comelec Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal and Smartmatic Asia Pacific President Cesar Flores. Larrazabal, the Comelec's youngest commisioner who headed the poll body's automation committee, became the new "idol ng bayan." Meanwhile, Flores, the Venezuelan executive who had to regularly face the media to explain and defend their PCOS machines, became the new "crush ng bayan."
The automation also helped usher in a new addition to the Philippines' colorful election lingo. Before Congress officially proclaimed him as the country's top guy, journalists referred to Noynoy Aquino as "president-apparent."
Searches for election results again dominated the logs after the October 25 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

- Manny Pacquiao -- the "Pambansang Kamao" -- defeated his opponents in and out of the ring and continued to rock our search logs this year. Last March, Pacquiao won against Ghanaian boxer Joshua Clottey -- not by knock out as some predicted -- but via a unanimous decision. Two months later, Pacquiao got elected as congressman of Sarangani province.
Pacman prepared for his life as a politician by going through a 10-day certificate course in legislation and governance at the Development Academy of the Philippines. Despite his entry in politics and the fervent request from his mother, Dionisia, for him to retire from boxing, he's not yet ready to leave the ring. He said the "Pacmom" eventually agreed to let him take on another fight.
In June, the Pacman received the Fighter of the Year and Fighter of the Decade awards from the Boxing Writers Association of America.
Fans were dismayed when Floyd Mayweather backed out of a widely anticipated November bout with Pacquiao after the Filipino boxer nixed an Olympic-style drug test that the Pretty Boy was insisting on. But they still eagerly awaited Manny's next fight even after it was announced that Mexican-American Antonio Margarito would be his next opponent.
Because of Pacquiao, an Italian-American comedian became infamous in the Philippines. In his podcast, Adam Carolla called Manny "an illiterate" who prayed to "chicken bones" after a caller asked for his reaction to Pacquiao's indifference to Mayweather's call for a drug test.
Pacquiao campaigned for presidential candidate Manny Villar. Unfortunately, his luck and charisma did not rub off on the senator and real estate magnate.
Pacquiao ended the year on high note when he beat Margarito in November and bagged his eighth international boxing title, the Word Boxing Council's super welterweight belt.

- Anne Curtis' wardrobe malfunction -- which happened while she was performing a dance number for the summer special of ABS-CBN's Sunday variety show "ASAP XV" in Boracay last March -- made her even more popular in Yahoo! Philippines Search. The photos of her faulty bikini top went viral on the Web and were even published in tabloids. This disheartened Curtis, but she chose to just move on. Sam Milby, her ex-boyfriend and leading man in "Babe, I Love You," denied that the bikini brouhaha was just a publicity stunt for their movie.
Anne also did a movie, "In Your Eyes," with another ex-boyfriend, Richard Gutierrez, and Claudine Barretto. While Curtis shone in this movie, she was worried that her love scenes with Gutierrez would cause problems with her boyfriend Erwan Heussaff, a Filipino-French businessman.
Fortunately, Curtis revealed that her fears were unfounded. She told the Philippine Daily Inquirer: "If you follow me on Twitter, you'll see that we're okay." She added that she's learned that it's best not to talk too much about a non-showbiz partner.
The Showtime host is set to star in ABS-CBN's remake of the Korean drama "Green Rose."

- Shaina Magdayao became hot copy when it was revealed that she was actor John Lloyd Cruz's new girlfriend. In the past, the actor, who was already hot copy himself, had dated actress Ciara Sotto, stylist Liz Uy, and actress Ruffa Gutierrez. Cruz came clean in June and told The Buzz host Boy Abunda that he and Magdayao were indeed a couple.
But it seemed that not everyone was happy for Magdayao and Cruz. In September, a nasty rumor about the two being caught in a compromising position began making the rounds. As the crazy story goes, Cruz and Magdayao were brought to a hospital in Quezon City because of a case of "penis captivus." The story likewise emphasized that they had to undergo a surgical procedure so that they could be pulled apart.
In a press conference, Magdayao told the press, "I think it's the most outrageous chismis ever sa industriya natin."
Unfortunately, the online mob had a ball with the X-rated rumor. In forums, users hiding behind pseudonyms claimed to know people who had personally witnessed Magdayao and Cruz being rushed to the hospital because of their so-called compromising position.

- This year, the Queen of All Media attempted to stay out of the spotlight after her brother was elected president. Alas -- whether by accident or by design -- she always managed to be the center of attention.
Just before the nation celebrated the ninth anniversary of EDSA 2 in January, Kris Aquino was busy denying that she created a commotion at the house of Mayen Austria, a fan of her husband, basketball player James Yap.
A few days before the anniversary of the People Power Revolution in February, Aquino was confined at the Makati Medical Center after slipping in the shower and having high blood pressure.
While campaigning for her brother, Aquino said that in the event of Noynoy's victory, she would be willing to leave the country to make sure that she didn't cause problems in his administration. When it became apparent that her brother would be the next president, Aquino's critics called on her to leave the Philippines via Facebook hate pages.
Aquino ignored her critics. Instead, she announced she was leaving her showbiz talk shows -- "The Buzz" and "Showbiz News Ngayon" -- to avoid creating controversies during her brother's presidency. She also said on June 19 that she would temporarily quit using Twitter.
Aquino didn't lie low for long. Her controversial interviews were still featured on The Buzz. Aquino's Twitter hiatus lasted barely two months. By August 8, she was back on the social networking site, justifying her return by saying that "we live in a democracy."
Three days before her brother formally stepped in as the country's new president, Aquino said she was giving up on her marriage to Yap.
Then, as the nation commemorated the first death anniversary of her mother, former President Cory Aquino, "The Buzz" aired an interview where she denied pregnancy rumors. She also explained why she separated from Yap by reciting lines from the song "It Must Have Been Love." She went on to say that she was open to the idea of dating Junjun Binay, the mayor of Makati.
Two days before the 27th death anniversary of former Senator Ninoy Aquino, Kris faced Yap in court to discuss visitation rights for their son James Jr., nicknamed "Bimby." On the eve of the meeting, she tweeted that for their son's sake, she'll be friends with James.
On her brother's 100th day in office, Kris tweeted that she and her sons are all infected with foot and mouth disease and would be in isolation for at least a week.
As veteran director Jose Javier Reyes once said, "Kris Aquino existing away from the limelight is like fish living out of water." But Archbishop Socrates Villegas had this advice for Kris: "You will find your real happiness, as your mother did, not in being in the limelight, but by being the spotlight lighting the face of Jesus."

- Willie Revillame's tiff with a fellow ABS-CBN talent Jobert Sucaldito spelled the end of his popular variety show "Wowowee" and led to a bitter legal battle with the network. Revillame wanted Sucaldito fired for making disparaging comments about "Wowowee" contestants. When the network didn't kick out Sucaldito, Revillame took a leave of absence. Eventually, Wowowee was replaced by "Pilipinas Win na Win."
Despite the fact that his contract with ABS-CBN lasts until September 2011, Revillame signed with TV5. In September, TV5 announced that Revillame would be hosting a primetime variety show called "Willing Willie." ABS-CBN failed to secure a temporary restraining order against the show.
On the third week of "Willing Willie," Revillame welcomed as co-host Valenzuela City councilor Shalani Soledad, who had just ended her relationship with President Noynoy Aquino. It was an interesting alliance because Revillame had supported Manny Villar in the 2010 presidential race.

Meanwhile, the Department of Labor and Employment said the Philippines now has an oversupply of nurses. Apparently, the overseas demand for the job has declined.

This year's top ten searches in Yahoo! Philippines attest to the Filipino netizens' enthusiasm for sports, obsession with celebrities, interest in politics, and addiction to controversies. They also wanted to know about LeBron James, so they searched for videos of his dunks and even photos of his house. After James left Cleveland Cavaliers to become a free agent, basketball fans wondered which team he would join next. His decision to join Miami Heat was met with criticism. Marian Rivera remains one of the most-searched celebrities in Yahoo! Philippines this year. The Kapuso actress had her hands full with telenovelas, a movie, and endorsements. But she also had her share of controversies.
After playing the Filipina superhero "Darna," Marian starred in the Philippine remake of the Korean drama "Endless Love" with her real-life leading man, Dingdong Dantes. The couple flew to Spain to meet Rivera's father in February. They also did a movie, "You To Me Are Everything," and were featured in a number of commercials together. Dongyan, as their fans call the pair, also helped in the presidential campaign of Noynoy Aquino.
While Rivera and Dantes are now more open to talking about their relationship, news reports and blind items portrayed Rivera as a jealous girlfriend. Earlier in the year, she reportedly had a tiff with Rhian Ramos, Dantes' leading lady in GMA-7's remake of the Korean telenovela "Stairway to Heaven." In August, Marian's alleged confrontation with "Endless Love" co-star Bela Padilla helped the latter gain more exposure. Other reports warned reality TV contestant and model Sam Pinto not to get too close to Dantes so as not to provoke Rivera’s ire. For his part, Dantes said he's very happy with Rivera.
Rivera's imperfect English had also become the subject of jokes in this country full of little brown Americans. Her "Isa po akong psychology (I am psychology)" remark created buzz in cyberspace, with haters even calling her names.
Rivera has kept her chin up in the face of the negative press. When Yahoo! Philippines asked her what she considers the most important accomplishment in her career so far, she said "Pinakamahalaga sa akin, minahal ako ng tao bilang ako, na tinanggap nila ako nang buong-buo (The most important thing is that people love me just as I am, that they’ve accepted me wholeheartedly)."
Indeed, as feminist writer Katrina Stuart Santiago wrote, "If there's anything that Marian has taught us, it's that we could use a little less shame and a lot more realness, a little less insecurity and a whole lot more confidence."
